Our rolling stock fleet consists of a wide variety of items, all of which saw service with the various railway companies operating in Tasmania until being obtained for preservation.
Steam LocomotivesLocomotive H2 was built for the Tasmanian Government Railways in 1951, by the Vulcan Foundry of England. Until its withdrawal from service in 1975, H2 was used on both goods and passenger trains around Tasmania. Saved for preservation, the loco returned to service in 1987 and hauled special passenger trains in the south of Tasmania until 1994, when it was again withdrawn. A major overhaul is nearing completion, and the loco is expected back in service in 2008. Sister loco H5 was purchased from a Northern Tasmanian strawberry farm in late 2007 (where it has been on display since 1979), and is a long term project. |

The Society also owns M1 and MA1, which were built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns of England for the Tasmanian Government Railways in 1952. They differ from the H class in that the M locos were designed for light passenger use. The two Society locomotives were removed from parks in 2000 and are long term restoration projects.

Diesel LocomotivesThe Tasmanian Government Railways' X class were introduced to service in 1951 and resulted in the withdrawal of many classes of steam locomotive. The X class locos were replaced by larger and more powerful locomotives from the late 1970s. Two of the Society's locomotives, X10 and X18, went straight into preservation when withdrawn from service in 1988. The third, X30, was puchased after 15 years on outside display at St Marys. The X class was supplemented from 1961 with a number of locally built Y class, which although larger and more modern, are compatible with the X class. Society locomotive Y2 was withdrawn in 1991, and was in poor condition when delivered. Subsequent work by members has returned the locomotive to operational condition. |
The Society's collection also includes three diesel shunters - former Tasmanian Government Railways locomotives U5 (privately owned, and operational) & V7 (body and frame only) and Emu Bay Railway Number 21 (some work required before re-entry to service).
The passenger carriages operated by the Society include three articulated ACS class carriages from the Tasmanian Government Railways Tasman Limited service and two smaller carriages from the Emu Bay Railway Company's West Coaster train.
Other vehicles, including two DB class guards vans and a DT class rail motor trailer, are used on service trains or have been obtained for future use.
In addition to passenger rolling stock, the Society also has a number of vehicles for storage or for use in maintaining the railway line. The fleet of goods wagons includes a tank wagon, five open wagons, two ballast hoppers, four flat wagons and three covered vans.
