Photo Gallery - A look back at Launceston Workshops

All photographs © Michael Dix

This set of photographs looks back at the Launceston workshops at Invermay from the late 1970s until the mid 1990s, when all operations were closed down or moved to the current facilities at East Tamar Junction. The Inveresk site was first used for railway purposes in the late 1860s when construction commenced of the Launceston and Western Railway from Launceston to Deloraine

The Diesel 'Shops

The main workshop building was opened in 1953 and was built to perform maintenance on the newly-delivered X class diesel-electric locomotives.

Left: An overall view of the northern end of the main diesel workshops building on 26 March 1981. Visible are locos (left to right) V12, 859, Y4, X1 and X21.

Right: Newly-arrived ex South Australian Railways loco 856 undergoes some attention in the load tank on 19 June 1981, while X3 is parked in the battery change area.

Left: Sitting on steam loco tender bogies, and looking like it is being scrapped, loco Y5 is seen undergoing a major overhaul. When released for traffic, it will have been fitted with air brakes and painted green. 13 October 1981.

Right: Freshly repainted ZC43 awaits a few finishing touches in the paint shop before being released into traffic again. Many of the ZB and ZC class locos saw significant service in Tasmania still wearing their Queensland Railways colours. 22 January 1992.
