Wagons galore

Launceston workshops were also responsible for carrying out most of the work on the TGR / AN wagon and carriage fleet.

Left: In later years the wagon workshops were in the "Stones Building" which was originally the main erecting shop in steam loco days. In this photograph, work is being carried out on the conversion of two ex-South Australian Railways O series open wagons into FW class log wagons. 2 April 1980.

Right: From the 1980s onwards, the old passenger station and goods yard area became somewhat of a dumping ground for stored or out of service wagons. In the background of this photo can be seen a variety of wagons - six underframes for tank wagons, a superphosphate wagon or two ready for service, another one ready to be modified and even an upsidedown ballast wagon. 28 April 1989.

Left: The four HH class were constructed at Launceston by joining two shorter HA class wagons together. A three-bay wagon was built in the same method, although this wagon sagged rather quickly and was soon replaced by a two bay wagon.10 October 1989.

Right: A rare luxury for X6 was the use of the steam cleaning facilities on 15 August 1980. The old coaling tower still dominates the scene, although it was only a few weeks before it was demolished on 11 September.
